Students must complete 2 compulsory modules – English Language and Mathematics – PLUS one of two double modules – physics or business/economics modules.

The choice of optional module depends on the university course the students wish to follow.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE MODULEMATHEMATICS (DOUBLE MODULE)
These are designed to help students reach an IELTS band score of 6.5. They also help students prepare to successfully follow an Irish/UK university degree programme. This includes:
      
›Understanding lectures and taking notes
›Writing and presenting course work
›Making oral presentations
›Discussing ideas with staff and other students
      
The course aims to enable students to extend their mathematical knowledge and skills to the stage where they may progress successfully to a degree programme in the physical sciences, engineering, business studies or accounting and finance.
The course delivers lectures on the following key topics and themes:
      
›Algebra
›Sequences and Series
›Co-ordinate Geometry
›Functions
›Trigonometry
›Calculus
›Introduction to differential equations
›Complex Number Theory
›Vector Analysis

PHYSICS (DOUBLE MODULE)
The course covers a number of key concepts ranging from Mechanics and Materials to Fields and Waves.

The course delivers lectures on the following key topics and themes
      
›Newtonian mechanics, including statics, linear and rotational dynamics.
›Forces and energy are discussed, along with their role in the molecular structure of matter, properties of liquids and gases.
›Thermodynamics.
›The role of fields, in particular the gravitational and electromagnetic fields, are discussed.
›The description of natural phenomena and the widespread occurrence of oscillations and wave motion are stressed with examples taken from the physics of sound.

BUSINESS MODULE ONE: ECONOMICS AND FINANCE
Course objectives: To provide a good foundation in Macroeconomics and Financial Accounting.

The primary focus of the course is dependent on both financial accounting and International economics.
      
›Macroeconomics will provide the student with a basic understanding of how domestic and international economic change affects business organisations.
›The element of Financial Accounting will introduce non-specialist students to basic financial and management accounting skills and techniques. The module will familiarise the students with the use, analysis and interpretation of accounting statements in addition to preparation of financial statements.
BUSINESS MODULE TWO: THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Course objectives: To introduce students to contemporary issues and controversies in the present business environment.

It provides an introduction:
      
›To some of the debates raised in the present global economy with regard to ethical issues relevant to business in Ireland/UK
›To the framework of the present business environment in the European Union.
      
The module also aims to improve students’ study skills within a business context in order to enable students to progress to a number of different business degree courses.
