Delta

Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, part of the University of Cambridge; is the most recognised in-service English Language Teaching qualification in the world.

Delta is intended for a range of teachers, including primarily:

  • Teachers with at least one year’s experience.
  • Teachers in any context, working with any age range.
  • Teachers who have attended an initial teacher training course.

Delta may also be suitable for:

  • Teachers who wish to change their career path from teaching to teacher training, academic management, test design, etc.

Delta Module 1

This module focuses on extending and developing candidates’ knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning English in a range of contexts.

·         Historical and current theories of first and second language acquisition.

·         How these theories influence teaching methodologies.

2. Different teaching approaches and methodologies, including current developments.

·         Teaching methodologies, both mainstream and experimental.

·         The effectiveness of these methodologies in different learning environments.

3. Language systems and learners’ linguistic problems.

·         Features of language systems (e.g. meaning, form, pronunciation, and use)

·         Teaching methodology choices in language systems.

4. Language skills and learners’ problems.

·         Features of language skills (e.g. the subskills and strategies needed by learners).

·         Teaching methodology choices in language skills.

5. Knowledge of resources, materials, and reference sources for language learning.

·         The practical uses of a range of resources in a range of teaching contexts.

6. Key assessment concepts and terminology.

·         How to apply key assessment principles, such as validity and reliability, to classroom-based assessment

Delta Module 1

The Module 1 examination consists of two 90-minute papers, with a 30-minute break in between.

At International House Dublin, we have designed an intensive two-week course which aims to prepare you to take the Delta Module 1 assessment.  During these two weeks, you will cover input sessions covering the course syllabus and you will also participate in exam preparation sessions, which are specifically designed to advise you on how to answer the exam questions and to show you what constitutes a pass answer.  You will also have the opportunity to participate in two ‘mock’ exams and receive feedback on your performance.

Entry requirements are as follows:

  • Having at least one year’s experience of teaching English.
  • Candidates for whom English is not their first language, must have a level of English equivalent to the Council of Europe Framework level C1 or above and will be required to show documentary proof of their level.  Applicants may be asked to complete some English language tasks as part of the application process.
